August has come and gone.
I can’t believe the month flew by so fast. Surprisingly, I read a lot of books this month. Considering I had kids at home, we all took the time to visit the library and read.
Here are all the books I read this month, and what I thought!

Amulet: Books 1 – 9 by Kazu Kibuishi
Overall rating: ★★★★☆ | 4 / 5
I read the first books back in 2016, and over time, as the new ones came out, I read them. However, I missed the last one, so I did a re-reading session of all 9 books.
I’m pleased with how it ended. A little rushed, but it’s a great series for kids in Middle School and up.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Overall rating: ★★★★★ | 5 / 5
My eldest daughter read this and came to me with tears running down her face when she finished. It broke her heart so much.
Seeing her face, I decided to read A Thousand Splendid Suns as well.
I didn’t cry as much as she did, but it was still a heartbreaking experience—the journey of 2 women during the Soviet occupation in Afghanistan.
Highly recommended to visualize what women go through in other countries.

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman
Overall rating: ★★★★★ | 5 / 5
Upon the recommendation of many, many people on TikTok, I purchased the audiobook on Audible.
I listened to this on 1.2x speed (normally, I will listen between 1.5-2x speed). Leaving it at close to its normal speed was the best choice.
Because Jeff Hays is such a wonderfully talented voice actor and narrator. He made this novel so much more enjoyable compared to if I had read this physically.
If you want a silly litRPG-style story, this is it.
It is for mature audiences, so proceed at your own risk.

Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan
Overall rating: ★★★★☆ | 4 / 5
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
Overall rating: ★★★★☆ | 4 / 5
The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar
Overall rating: ★★★★☆ | 4 / 5
Sleep: A Novel by Honor Jones
Overall rating: ★★★★☆ | 4 / 5
These four books/audiobooks were for the Goodreads summer reading challenge. I would never have diverged from my normal reading of fantasy fiction novels if it weren’t for this challenge.
Sometimes we need this to help us read a new story. Open up our minds to the possibilities of a world outside of our comfort zone.

Brume Volume 1: The Dragon Awakens by Jérôme Pélissier
Overall rating: ★★★★☆ | 4 / 5
This children’s graphic novel was courtesy of NetGalley.
I’ve already posted a review for it here!

Sunrise on the Reaping by Jérôme Pélissier
Overall rating: ★★★★☆ | 4 / 5
I read The Hunger Games many, many years ago (when it was hyped, before the movies).
When the Prequel book, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, came out, I held a read together with a few online friends.
Reading Sunrise on the Reaping, Haymitch’s story is told. And it does not disappoint (maybe for some, it did disappoint. I enjoyed listening to the audiobook on this one).
And that’s it!
17 books in total. 10 of which were graphic novels, but they still count towards reading goals (I believe in audiobooks also counting as reading!).
Still, I didn’t get around to reading my summer reading list.
My TBR will have to be carried forward!
Did you read any of these? What were your favourite summer reads?
