Summary

She splayed her fingers on the back of the ship, annoyed at how her nerves were humming, like they couldn’t decide if she should be afraid of him or flattered.

Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother, or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her.
Halfway around the world, Cinder is back and trying to break out of prison—even though she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive if she does.

As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana.

The adventure continues in this fresh fairytale retelling that combines elements of Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.

My Review

This one must have been my least favourite book in the entire series. As much as I love the entire cast from the Lunar Chronicles and the overall series, Scarlet is also my least favourite character. The constant refrain of “where is my grandmother, I have to find my grandmother, where did you take her, I need to find her” was repetitive throughout this one. True, it’s a big part of the story, but the obsession and frantic nature of her character’s drive to find her grandmother were a tad bit annoying. We get it. She is upset, loved her grandmother, and has no other family in the world.

The plot is fast-paced, and the writing is similar to Cinder. There’s a little more world-building, but not much compared to Cinder. I kind of hoped for more details about the world, but here we are with an assumption of how the world is.

As I listened to the audiobook version on my revisit, I enjoyed the narrator Rebecca Soler with her expressive voice acting. It made the story a little more enjoyable to listen to than reading it on the page.

These are just my two cents, anyway. I’m sure others will love it more than I did, and in no way does this mean I am stopping my reading of this series. I still love it. It’s just that this book in the series didn’t meet my expectations.

I still can’t wait for this to be adapted for the screen. Perhaps it will be even more exciting when I see this brought to life.

This is an alternate cover for Scarlet. The “wolf” is a modified Lunar human!
