I’ll be quite frank. This is not the type of book I normally reach out to indulge in, but it hit my FYP like a truck that I couldn’t ignore. All the TikTok influencers are raving about it, and the glory of listening to this on audiobook.

So here I am, a little late to the party. But how did I ever think to ignore it? I am glad I got to listen to this delightfully narrated work. Jeff Hays has done an amazing job with the variety of character voices in this series. And Carl’s voice??? Icing on the cake. Simply marvelous! I love how he also narrated Donut’s voice (yes, we have a talking cat!).

Earth is held hostage by aliens.

Earth has been transformed into a multi-level dungeon. Many have been killed. Those who have survived must enter to continue to live. But they are being televised to a wider audience in the universe – to other beings from other planets.

Think of a video game, where you start at Level 1 and eventually build up your character by fighting monsters and collecting loot. Distributing stat points, gaining experience points. This is the essence of LitRPG.

I have followed NADDPoD (Not Another Dungeons and Dragons Podcast) on Spotify for many years, and if there is anything comparable in terms of content, Dungeon Crawler Carl reminded me of it. Those were some of the best times I had listening to their campaigns.

Admittedly, I don’t think I would have retained as much information while reading this novel as I did while listening to it. The story itself is entertaining. It’s also why I appreciate the ease of understanding and the sheer enjoyment of the audiobook.

I will 100% continue to listen to this series.

Fair warning to anyone considering—this contains many adult themes, swearing, and more. Check the trigger warnings first. Think about your maturity level. There is a lot of dark humor.

A lot of it.
