Writing a review for this novel took me a week. Despite having finished reading, it has profoundly stayed with me. There are no words to describe what I felt. It is one of those novels that must be read to experience and understand the true tragedy and joy of it.
If you’re looking to have your heart broken over and over again, then this is the book for you.
The Sword of Kaigen is a love letter from a mother and her son.
It is the “what ifs” of the past, the regrets of “what could have been”, and the “if only” of the present.
The writing beautifully portrays the emotions of each character. It shifts between the points of view of Mamoru, the son; Misaki, the mother; and Takeru, the father.
A fusion of Avatar: The Last Airbender set in a modern world, with technology and science. However, we are taken away from that world to an island where old traditions live, and the strongest warriors are those who fight with the sword. The Sword of Kaigen borrows language and terminology from Japanese. I highly recommend referencing the glossary. This way, you will not lose track of what each word represents.

Author M.L. Wang has many other books from the world of Duna, if you’re interested!
